We often purge our closets and donate clothing to those less fortunate. But how about clearing our bookshelves and Sunday School classrooms of needed Christian reading materials? The lonely and forgotten in jails, shelters, and other bare places would be entertained, comforted, and inspired by the words of Christian fiction, Christian self-help books, Bibles, and even used Sunday school books, magazines, and devotionals. Why not pick the fruit of good writing from our bookshelves and encourage our friends and fellow church attenders to do the same then offer to carry those books to the chaplain or shelter director.
I encourage my readers to give used books, Bibles, and Christian reading materials to local jail and shelter faculty to spread the word of God to folks in unfortunate circumstances. Call the jail or shelter director and arrange a time to take the donation you have collected.
The Word will be put into the hands of humans hungry for good reading, hungry for God.
